AFCON 2027: Super Eagles arrive Bissau for crucial qualifier
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have arrived in Bissau ahead of Tuesday’s crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria departed the country on Sunday after completing preparations in Uyo, where the team secured a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening Group L fixture on Friday.
The Super Eagles held their final training session at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday morning before leaving Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, for Guinea-Bissau on a chartered ValueJet flight at about 5pm.
The team arrived at the Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau at about 8:40pm, according to Super Eagles media officer, Promise Efoghe.
The trip comes as Nigeria look to build on their opening-day victory and strengthen their position in a group where Guinea-Bissau have also made a winning start.
The Djurtus defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their first Group L match, putting them ahead of Nigeria on goal difference and setting up an early battle for top position.
Nigeria will face Guinea-Bissau at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro on Tuesday, with both sides looking to maintain their unbeaten starts to the qualifying campaign.
The encounter also brings back memories of Nigeria’s previous meeting with Guinea-Bissau during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. The Djurtus stunned the Super Eagles with a 1-0 victory at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Overall, the two countries have met four times, with Guinea-Bissau recording one victory against Nigeria.
The stakes are particularly high in the current qualifying format, as only the winner of Group L will secure an automatic ticket to the 2027 AFCON, while co-hosts Tanzania already have their place at the tournament.
With both Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau starting the campaign with victories, Tuesday’s meeting could prove significant in determining the early direction of the group.
