PFIPC: Court Orders IGP, AGF to Grant Adeniyi Adeyemi Access to Lawyers
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Police Force to grant Adeniyi Adeyemi access to lawyers of his choice while he remains in custody.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the order on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while ruling on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on behalf of Adeyemi.
The court directed the authorities to ensure that Adeyemi has unimpeded access to his legal practitioners at all reasonable hours.
The development comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), which Adeyemi had claimed to head, as well as criminal proceedings relating to allegations of forgery and impersonation.
Adeyemi approached the Federal High Court seeking several orders concerning his detention and treatment by the authorities.
Among the reliefs sought was an order compelling the respondents to allow him access to lawyers of his choice for as long as he remained in custody.
The court granted that particular request.
According to the court order, the authorities are required to permit Adeyemi “unimpeded access” to legal practitioners of his choosing at all reasonable hours.
The order is significant because Adeyemi’s legal team had also asked the court to prevent investigators from interrogating him or requiring him to make, adopt or sign statements without his lawyer being present.
However, the court did not grant all the other reliefs at this stage.
Justice Egwuatu declined to grant Adeyemi’s requests for immediate release, bail and access to medical treatment without first hearing from the respondents.
The judge subsequently directed the AGF and the police to show cause within 72 hours why the remaining reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.
The matter was adjourned until September 9, 2026, when the respondents are expected to appear and respond to the application.
Reports confirmed that the court granted the relief relating to access to legal counsel while deferring the other requests pending a response from the authorities.
