Kane, Mbappe, Yamal headline open 2026 Ballon d’Or race as winners set to announce in London
The race for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or remains wide open ahead of Monday’s ceremony in London, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal emerging as leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Unlike previous editions dominated by clear favourites, this year’s contest has several credible candidates, each boasting impressive individual performances but carrying weaknesses that could influence voters.
Kane, the Bayern Munich and England striker, enters the race after scoring a remarkable 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 season. His goals helped Bayern secure domestic silverware, strengthening his argument for the award.
However, his failure to win the Champions League or the World Cup could count against him. Although England finished third at the World Cup, Kane’s inability to score beyond the round of 16 has raised questions about his impact in the decisive stages of the tournament.
Mbappe, meanwhile, has built a strong case through his extraordinary scoring record. The Real Madrid forward finished as the leading scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup, where he also claimed the Golden Boot.
His 2026 World Cup campaign further enhanced his standing, making him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. Yet, despite his individual brilliance, neither Real Madrid nor France secured the major trophies that might have strengthened his chances.
Yamal offers a different argument. The Barcelona teenager added another La Liga title to his growing list of achievements before helping Spain win the World Cup. At 19, he is also seeking to become the youngest player to win the Ballon d’Or.
His influence and dribbling ability have made him one of football’s most exciting talents, but his relatively modest contribution in front of goal at the World Cup could affect his chances. He scored once at the tournament and did not register an assist, although an injury had disrupted his preparations.
Defending champion Ousmane Dembele is also hoping to retain the award after helping Paris Saint-Germain win a second consecutive Champions League title. The French forward scored crucial goals during the knockout stages, but his performances were not considered as dominant as those of his previous campaign.
PSG teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is another contender after being named the Champions League’s Player of the Season. His decisive contributions helped the French club retain their European crown, although Georgia’s failure to qualify for the World Cup may weaken his chances.
Michael Olise has also attracted attention following a creative season with Bayern Munich. The French winger reportedly provided 41 assists across all competitions and was named Bayern’s best player for the second consecutive year. However, the absence of major international and European titles could limit his prospects.
Former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is another name in the conversation after returning from injury setbacks to play a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph. Nevertheless, his interrupted club season could make a second award difficult to secure.
Eight-time winner Lionel Messi has also remained competitive at 39, inspiring Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup triumph and leading Argentina to the World Cup final. But Argentina’s defeat to Spain and the comparatively lower standing of Major League Soccer among some award voters could work against him.
The contest highlights the challenge of determining the world’s best player when individual statistics, team trophies and international performances point in different directions.
For Kane, the award would represent recognition of one of the most prolific seasons of his career. For Mbappe, it would reward a goal-scoring campaign across major competitions, while a victory for Yamal would mark another milestone in the young Spaniard’s rapid rise.
With several candidates presenting compelling but imperfect cases, the final decision is expected to reflect how voters balance individual brilliance against success on the biggest stages.
