Police, man clash over NAFDAC registration number on zobo drink
A disagreement between police officers and a man over the demand for a NAFDAC registration number for locally made zobo drinks has sparked reactions on social media.
In a video circulating online on Wednesday, the officers were seen questioning a woman selling bottled zobo drinks and asking her to produce the products’ labels and registration details from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
One of the officers defended the request, insisting that the drinks should have a NAFDAC registration number.
“This thing is supposed to have a NAFDAC number. Does this thing have a NAFDAC number? As a police officer, don’t I have the right to ask?” the officer said.
However, a man recording the encounter challenged the officers, questioning their authority to demand the registration details and expressing frustration over how long the incident had lasted.
The disagreement soon escalated into a tense exchange between the man and the officers, with the content creator threatening to share the footage on social media.
“I be content creator, I go put am for social media. This na ordinary zobo. Una no dey do your work? Ordinary zobo. Over four hours, for what now?” he said.
The video has generated discussion about the regulation of locally produced drinks, the responsibilities of law enforcement officers and the treatment of small-scale traders.
However, the footage alone does not establish whether the product had the required registration or whether the officers were acting within their lawful authority in the circumstances.
