Adamawa APC governorship candidate welcomes defection of 21 council chairmen, councillors
The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Ahmed Galadima, has welcomed the defection of the state’s 21 local government chairmen and 226 councillors from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Galadima described the development as a major boost to the party’s grassroots support, saying the decision by the elected local government officials reflected changing political alignments in the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Adamu Sambo, the APC candidate congratulated the defectors, describing their move as an indication of their commitment to unity and development.
“Their choice reflects political foresight and an understanding that the future of our state is best served by unity, purposeful leadership and a shared commitment to development,” Galadima said.
He also commended Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, for what he described as his inclusive leadership and efforts to build bridges across political divides.
According to Galadima, the governor’s political engagements have contributed to the growing appeal of the APC in the state.
The governorship candidate further linked the defections to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, arguing that the movement of political leaders and grassroots structures into the ruling party could strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the development presented an opportunity to promote cooperation, improve governance and respond more effectively to the needs of Adamawa residents.
The defections come as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections, with control of local government structures expected to play an important role in grassroots mobilisation.
However, while the movement of the 21 council chairmen and 226 councillors represents a significant political development for the APC, its impact on the party’s electoral fortunes will ultimately depend on how effectively it translates the new alignments into broader voter support.
