At just 23 years old, Prince Daniel Afamefune Chukwujindu has taken on a responsibility that usually comes much later in life, becoming the new traditional ruler of the Ekwuoma Kingdom in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Daniel, a Microbiology undergraduate at Delta State University, Abraka, was formally installed on Thursday as the 11th Ajeh of Ekwuoma, succeeding his late father, King Chinedu Samuel Chukwujindu.
He assumed the royal title of Ezeagu-Ukpo II following the completion of his father’s burial rites. His late father, Ezeagu-Ukpo I, was the 10th Ajeh of the kingdom and ruled for 18 years.
Daniel’s emergence followed Ekwuoma’s traditional succession system of primogeniture, under which the first son of a reigning monarch succeeds his father.
The community said the tradition has been observed since the kingdom was established almost 400 years ago.
His installation therefore marked the end of his father’s 18-year reign and the beginning of a new chapter under one of the youngest monarchs in the history of the kingdom.
The colourful ceremony brought together traditional rulers, chiefs, community leaders, government officials, academics, members of the royal family, friends and well-wishers.
Traditional rites were performed to formally transfer the institution to the new monarch, while prayers and goodwill messages were offered for his reign.
Speaking after his installation, Daniel expressed appreciation to the people of Ekwuoma for accepting him and pledged to uphold the customs and traditions of the kingdom.
The young monarch also promised to make peace, unity and development priorities of his reign, while urging residents to work together for the progress of the community.
He called on the sons and daughters of Ekwuoma to support the traditional institution and avoid divisions that could slow down the development of the kingdom.
Daniel further appealed for stronger collaboration between the traditional institution, government and residents in addressing the challenges facing Ekwuoma.
The Chairman, Council of Chiefs and Orikeze of Ekwuoma, Chief Ernest Njokede, congratulated the new monarch and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the kingdom.
Njokede prayed for wisdom, strength, good health and divine guidance for Daniel, saying these would be essential as he takes on the demands of traditional leadership at a young age.
He also urged members of the community to support the new Ajeh and put the collective interest of Ekwuoma ahead of personal differences.
While paying tribute to the late monarch, Njokede described his 18-year reign as a period marked by service, peace and commitment to the welfare of the people.
He urged the people to preserve the legacy of the late king while giving his successor the support needed to build on it.
“Ekwuoma belongs to all of us. It is our collective heritage. Let us treasure and guard it jealously, for we are the envy of numerous less fortunate communities around us,” Njokede said.
He stressed that the responsibility for developing the kingdom should not rest solely on the traditional ruler and chiefs.
“Community development is not the sole responsibility of the traditional institution or the chiefs; it is a shared responsibility that calls for the commitment of all sons and daughters of Ekwuoma and other residents of the kingdom,” he added.
For Daniel, his new position comes with the unusual challenge of balancing the responsibilities of traditional leadership with his education as a university student, as he begins his reign while still pursuing his Microbiology degree.
