Digboluja reveals why Peju Ogunmola got angry over gunshot scene
Popular Yoruba actor Taofeek Adewale, popularly known as Digboluja, has revealed how a misunderstanding during a movie shoot in 2023 led to a tense moment with veteran actress Peju Ogunmola after he fired a prop gun during a scene.
The incident, captured in a video circulating on social media, showed Ogunmola confronting Adewale shortly after the gunshot, expressing anger over what she described as a lack of prior information about the action.
“I don’t like it, you know I don’t like it when a gun is pointed at me. You didn’t tell me. I was told he (Adewale) would use an object to hit me. What rubbish!” the actress said.
Adewale appeared surprised by her reaction and explained that he had initially hesitated to pull the trigger because he believed the director had informed her about the scene.
Speaking in a follow-up interview shared online, the actor said he played a warrior in the movie and was required by the script to confront a woman, portrayed by Ogunmola, who played the role of an Iyalode.
“I read the movie script; I acted as a warrior. When I went to meet the woman at home to talk to her, and she didn’t oblige, I shot at her,” he said.
Adewale explained that he knew Ogunmola was uncomfortable with guns and had raised the issue with the director before filming the scene. According to him, the director assured him that the actress had been informed.
He said he relied on that assurance and proceeded with the scene, believing Ogunmola was aware of what would happen. However, the gunshot caught her by surprise, prompting her angry reaction.
Asked what the actress was expected to do in the scene, Adewale said she was supposed to fall to the ground after the gunshot, as required by the script.
He maintained that Ogunmola’s reaction was understandable because she had expected him to strike her with an object rather than fire a prop gun.
The actor also spoke about how he would have handled the situation if the veteran actress had slapped or physically confronted him, describing her as a mother figure he respected.
“Some people asked me what I would have done if she slapped me or rough-handled me,” he said.
He added, “If she slapped me 12 times, I won’t say a word. Once she has slapped me thrice, I will run away because she is a mother to me. I was also pained about the incident.”
The revelation has sparked reactions on social media, with some users praising Adewale for his calmness while others questioned the director’s handling of the scene.
An X user, Eminent Kayode, wrote, “My respect for this man increased by ten folds.”
Another user, OyinAtiBode, criticised the director over the incident and praised Ogunmola for remaining respectful despite being upset.
Similarly, an X user identified as Oluwaseun described the veteran actress as a humble and good-natured person.
The incident has highlighted the importance of clear communication between directors and actors, particularly when scenes involve weapons or unexpected actions that could startle cast members.
